10 races will take place throughout the 2014 season, spread across six rounds. Five of those six will be held on various tracks in Germany, the remaining one in Austria. Also, a special show race will be organised in Moscow, Russia, on July 13.
The series features Volkswagen Scirocco R cars powered by 2-litre TSI (turbocharged, direct-injected) engines churning out 173 kW/235 PS of power (at 6000 RPM) and 275 Nm of torque (at 3000 RPM). The cars are equipped with a push-to-pass system, enabling drivers to temporarily use 50 PS of extra power boost, achieved through raising turbo pressure.
Power is transferred via a 6-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox. The box shifts gears in next to no time, thanks to which a 1210 kg Scirocco R accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6,3 s and tops out at 220 km/h. The fuel tank holds 22 kg of natural gas compressed to over 200 bars. To comply with FIA standards, the cars have been equipped with safety cages and automatic fire extinguishers plus 6-point safety belts and head-protection-system driver seats.
In the current season, the series' partner responsible for CNG fuel deliveries is Gazprom Germania, the German subsidiary of the Russian natural gas mogul Gazprom.
After two rounds (at Hockenheim and Oschersleben, both in Germany), the top 5 of the general standings is:
