Seat has been developing TGI technology for a few years now, to the point of becoming the Volkswagen Group's inhouse specialist in terms of compressed methane. In fact, the Spanish company considers natural gas a much more viable alternative than hybrids and EVs, no matter how popular they may have been recently.
As far as the January-February sales figure is concerned, it's 10 times the result of the same period of 2017, which means more TGI Seats were sold across two months of 2018 than across nine months of 2017. And how many were sold exactly? 557, to be precise, which admittedly isn't that many, but growth rate is exponential, hands down.
The tendency first became visible in late 2017, when sales accelerated rapidly. Compared to 2016, figures improved by 300% at that time, but the figures for early 2018 are even better, promising a very good year.
Seat's current line-up of CNG-powered models consists of the Mii EcoFuel, the recently introduced Ibiza 1,0 TGI and the Leon 1,4 TGI, available as either a 5-door hatchback or an estate, with manual or DSG (dual-clutch) gearbox. By the end of 2018 another model will be added – the small crossover Arona, featuring the same technological underpinnings as the methane-fueled Ibiza.
