Using domestically-produced fuel makes all the sense in the world – the economy doesn't need to depend on imported resources and their price fluctuations, instead taking advantage of an abundantly available local product. And since it's local, it can be really affordable, too – without the added cost of transporting it between continents – and perhaps cleaner than imported one (the fewer tankers in the distribution chain, the better). Motorists in Kazakhstan seem to have realised the pros recently...
In the first half of 2018, 89592 cars converted to autogas were registered in Kazakhstan. The figure is perhaps not impressive, but respectable enough. However, it's the spike over the same period of the previous year that really makes you think – that's 44,5% more registrations than in the first six months of 2017 (https://gazeo.com/up-to-date/news/2017/Autogas-sales-increase-in-Kazakhstan,article,9849.html)! Also, between January and June of 2018 LPG-fueled vehicles accounted for almost 16% of all newly registered cars, which means autogas is gaining momentum rapidly.
While in some countries, like the US, autogas is primarily a fuel for fleets of commercial vehicles (vans, trucks and buses, sometimes taxis and police cars), in Kazakhstan the vast majority of new conversions were carried out in private cars. Out of the aforementioned figure of 89592 vehicles, 84660 units were owned by individual motorists, while only the remaining 4932 belonged to companies and institutions. Of course, we wouldn't mind if corporate fleets in Kazakhstan used more autogas-powered cars, as long as private drivers' interest in the world's most popular alternative fuel remains as high as this year. Unless it grows even more, that is!
