Introduction of BioLPG is for Calor a step towards becoming fully renewable by the year 2040. Before it's possible, the company will systematically reduce its carbon footprint, all the while allowing its customers to minimise their impact on the environment without having to implement costly improvements. All they will have to do is switch to Calor's "greener" version of LPG, be it for heating, industrial applications or used as motor fuel – autogas.
Chemically, BioLPG is the same as conventional, fossil-sourced LPG, so the two can be blended in any proportions, making the switch from one to the other perfectly smooth and hassle-free. The difference is in the production process – depending on type of feedstock used, BioLPG can cut emissions of greenhouse gasses by up to 88% compared to regular product, usually made during refining crude oil or obtained from natural gas deposits. If this isn't huge, then what is?
This exciting new development will enable our existing customers to dramatically improve their carbon footprint with no adjustment to their current heating systems or vehicles. It will also, for the first time, enable rural customers and fleet operators to use one of the lowest polluting energy sources in the world today. This development is part of our ongoing commitment to reduce our carbon emissions whilst growing our business and, by 2040, our ambition is for 100% of our energy products to be from renewable sources.
Matthew Hickin, Chief Executive, Calor
Calor aims to produce BioLPG locally rather than import it from overseas, so that Britain becomes more independent and secure in terms of energy supplies. There's another reason, though – decentralisation of energy provision and bringing production closer to where it's actually used. At the moment BioLPG is imported, with the first delivery of BioLPG (biopropane) having come from the Neste Biofuels production facility in Rotterdam on March 16, 2018. Apart from Great Britain, BioLPG will initially be available in France, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands and Belgium.
