Who thought a Golf could be this menacing? 
20-inch wheels aren't exactly the first thing you need for off-road driving, but they're definitely good-looking 
Golf will be Golf - even if it's customised, it's practical to the core 
© VolkswagenThere are millions of customised Golfs out there, but still the TGI GMOTION is one of a kindIt's an Alltrack, it's a Variant, it's a 4Motion, it's a TGI BlueMotion, but called GMOTION. Before you get lost in confusion, let us help you here: it's a slightly jacked-up estate Golf with four wheel drive and a brand new 1,5-litre TSI engine running on compressed natural gas. While the engine isn't that new as such, its CNG version is only now starting to replace the formerly used 1,4 TSI unit, which could also be found on the VW Group's other methane-fueled models, such as the Skoda Octavia G-TEC, Seat Leon TGI or Audi A3 g-tron.
What's under the hood isn't that important when it comes to Wörthersee concept cars, though – Volkswagen just uses them to bring focus to new technologies and features in stock. But of course, since this particular "Golfsburg" runs on fuel that is of interest to us, let's have a closer look at its powertrain before we move on to all the custom parts fitted by VW's creative team of 14 youngsters working at the company's facility in Zwickau.
© VolkswagenThe bench comes with the car, but you still need a table...And so, the Golf Variant TGI GMOTION is motivated by an engine generating 131 PS, which is 21 PS up from the previous iteration with the 1,4 unit. The motor is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG) and sends power to all four wheels via Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. And don't forget it's the Alltrack version, featuring protective plates and cladding making the Golf a little bit more able off the beaten track.
As far as custom features are concerned, the most prominent ones include a Thule roof box, 20-inch rims, upgraded brakes, custom exhaust and a combination of matte and gloss colours on the outside, plus a powerdome bonnet and a folding bench in the trunk, allowing the driver and passengers to enjoy their time outdoors. We have no doubt the GMOTION will remain a one-off, but you can still get a Golf Variant TGI BlueMotion Alltrack and enjoy pretty much the same advantages, perhaps sans the powerdome and the folding table. But let's face it – you can live without those!
