The device is mobile in a double sense – not only can it be moved from place to place, but also it features its own combustion engine, powered with, you guessed it, natural gas. The compressor's efficiency is enough to serve as a fueling station for a small NGV fleet or in the early stages of large fleet deployment. Besides, as fleets grow, subsequent GoFlo CNG80 units can be added to provide more fuel, especially that since they have combustion engines, no modifications in terms of electric power supply are required.
We believe that the lower cost and flexibility of operation of our mobile CNG compressor is bound to improve viability of methane-powered vehicles, in particular trucks and buses motivated with this clean, abundant and universally available fuel.
Rita Hansen, general director, Onboard Dynamics
Technology underpinning the GoFlo CNG80 took some 4 years to develop and was partially financed from the American Department of Energy's ARPA-E programme. Initially, the compressors will be available in limited numbers, with production expected to grow and reach full capacity in the second half of 2018.
Onboard Dynamics estimates the device will be sufficient for fleet operators whose daily needs do not exceed 300 GGE (gasoline gallon equivalent). According to the company, using the GoFlo CNG80 means refueling with natural gas at a lower price per unit than from a public CNG station.
