Landi Renzo
The company was founded in 1954 by Renzo Landi, who ran it with his wife until his death in 1977. At first the company manufactured mixers which became the main export product in 1963 and 1964. They were sold to Japan, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. After the death of the company’s founder, Landi Renzo continued to operate under the leadership of his wife and their son Stefano, who became managing director of Landi Renzo S.p.A. in 1987.
In 1993, Landi Renzo took over Landi Srl and the Dutch company Eurogas Holding BV, becoming Landi Renzo industrial group. In 1999, the company created its Polish branch – Landi Renzo Polska. A year later, Landi Renzo purchased MED – a company that manufactures i.e. gas injectors.
In subsequent years Landi Renzo opened branches in many parts of the world – in 2003 in Brazil, in 2005 in China and a year later in Pakistan. That same year Landi Renzo Corporate University was created (it’s a platform for exchanging experience), and yet another local branch opened the next year, this time in Iran. In June 2007, Landi Renzo S.p.A. was listed for the first time on the Italian Stock Exchange. On 13 October 2008, Landi Renzo took over Lovato, and in September 2009 the company opened another local branch, in Romania. Later Landi Renzo purchased AEB – a company that manufactures electronic components for automotive gas systems.
Currently, Landi Renzo brings together companies that are involved in the production of virtually all components of automotive gas systems, which makes it the world leader on the LPG and CNG market with a share exceeding 30%.
BRC
M.T.M. – BRC Gas Equipment was founded in 1977 and in a very short time became one of the major suppliers in the sector of alternative fuels. Initially the company was manufacturing only multivalve. In 1980s, it began producing a full range of components of gas supply systems (LPG and CNG).
BRC was the first company on the market to introduce a power system with electronic control of gas flow to carburetor engines. In 1996, BRC became the first Italian company to introduce gas injection systems for CNG and LPG.
Entering the twenty-first century, the company initiated the process of decentralization of its production, creating in 2000 its new branch in Buenos Aires (BRC Argentina) and in 2002 in Brazil (WMTM – a joint venture company with White Martins, a part of American Praxair group). In Argentina the company manufactures CNG systems and equipment. The plant in Manaus meets the demand of the Brazilian market. Both ventures are an essential part of BRC’s growth strategy for South America. In 2003, M.T.M. – BRC Gas Equipment signed a strategic deal with American company IMPCO – a world leader in the field of using gaseous fuels in automotive industry. The deal provides for trade and cooperation in the field of technology. The combined forces of the Italian-American consortium make for one of the most important companies in the alternative fuels market.
Summary
Discovering certain facts concerning the history of autogas is extremely difficult, because manufacturers often don’t bother publishing any information about their past. The abovementioned facts concerning some of the major companies from the autogas industry do not cover the whole history of LPG in Europe. It should rather be regarded as a very fragmentary outline that we will surely complete as we obtain more information on the topic.
