Green Hybrid Cup - Alberto Viberti returns

On July 13-14 2013, the BRC Green Hybrid Cup qualifying round was held at the Mugello circuit. The 19-year-old Alberto Viberti, winner of the Green Scout Cup 2011, stole the show.

Alberto Viberti, who returned to racing in the BRC Green Hybrid Cup, was the fastest driver in both sessions. In the first practice session, with the second time at the finish line, Alessandra Brena checked in, the third best result was achieved by the 2012 Green Scout Cup winner - Jimmy Ghione. The following positions were taken by Ferruccio Fontanella and Andrea Portatadino. The second training session ended in a very similar way. The best lap time was achieved by Alberto Viberti, ahead of Jimmy Ghione and Alessandra Brena.

During the training session Alberto Carobbio damaged his vehicle, but the Kia Venga was quickly repaired by BRC Racing Team mechanics.

Good to know

The rules say that the first eight drivers from the first race in start in reversed order in the second run of the of the round, which means that the first row is taken by drivers who finished 8th and 7th, the second row by those who came 6th and 5th and so on. The fourth row is occupied by those who came 1st and 2nd in the first run.

Pole position in the qualifying round for the first race was won by Jimmy Ghione. Alberto Viberti started from the place next to him. The second row of contestants comprised Alessandra Brena and Andrea Portatadino, and the third – Jacopo Lombardelli and Ferruccio Fontanella. Alberto Viberti won the first race, as he had a very strong start and immediately overtook Ghione. The third place went to the brilliant Alessandra Brena.

In accordance with the rules, Paolo Palanti started from pole position in the second run, because he came 8th in the morning race. The winner and the runner-up of the first race, Viberti and Ghione, both started from the fourth row, and Alessandra Brena started from the third.

After Brena’s start, she very quickly began to make up for losses, and after two laps was in 4th position, ahead of Fontanella, Portatadi and Palanti. Behind Brena was Gnemmi, who crashed the car and was out of the competition. On the fifth lap Portatadino and Palanti dropped further behind Brena, Viberti and Ghione. Viberti achieved his best lap time having overtaken Brena and the leading Fontanella on the final lap. The race ended with the victory of Alberto Viberti, the second place was taken by Ferruccio Fontanella and the third by Alessandra Brena. Jimmy Ghione and Andrea Portatadi finished just behind the podium.
