Volvo V90 BiFuel - Westport inside

Traditionally for Volvo, a methane-powered version of the company's latest creation – the V90 large family estate – is going to be offered. The car will feature the same engine which is used on the smaller V60 and Westport-sourced fuel system technology.

The engine is a 4-cylinder, 2-litre (1969 cm3) T5 unit belonging to the DrivE family. It can run on fossil compressed natural gas (CNG), compressed renewable biomethane or petrol. The motor offers 245 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque, transmitted to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

The Volvo V90 BiFuel will be an important model for us. It will primarily benefit our taxi fleet customers, and it will also be good for companies with an explicit environmental policy.

Fredrik Isakson, Manager Fleet Sales and Business Development, Volvo Car Sverige

Westport and Volvo Car are working together to provide customers with leading natural gas technology, great performance and ultimately a low-emissions profile. By collaborating with OEMs, like Volvo Car, we are able to develop vital technology solutions to reduce emissions and continue to meet demand for premium natural gas vehicles.

Nancy Gougarty, President and COO, Westport

When running on CNG, the car emits an already low 120 g of CO2 per kilometre, but when fueled with biomethane, the figure drops to just 40 g/km. Sales of the model, set to replace the aging V70 (which is now a standalone model, with no corresponding sedan version), commenced in Sweden in June 2016, with first deliveries scheduled for December of the same year.
