Kenworth T880 CNG/LNG - hard work, low costs

Gaseous fuels are definitely catching on in the US and information concerning new LPG-, CNG- and LNG-powered vehicles appears almost on a daily basis. The Kenworth T880 truck is yet another example.

With the advent of the Cummins Westport ISX12 G engine, which can run on either CNG or LNG, making new natural-gas-powered models is easy for Kenworth. The T680 has been introduced recently and now the T880 follows, available as dump, mixer, refuse, pickup and delivery trucks (80 thousand pounds/36 tons gross combined vehicle weight), all with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions. CNG/LNG tanks and fuel systems are manufactured and delivered by Agility Fuel Systems, Trilogy Engineered Solutions, and McNeilus.

The Cummins Westport engine offers 400 HP/406 PS of power and 1450 lb-ft/1967 Nm of torque. More importantly, though, it is much simpler from a maintenance standpoint than comparable Diesel units, since it needs no complicated and costly DPF (diesel particulate filter) or SCR (selective catalytic reduction) technology. And, of course, CNG/LNG offers fleet operators significant reductions in running costs due to the lower prices of fuel.
